You’re Never Too Old
Grandma Moses didn’t start painting until she was in her late 70’s. She had enjoyed needlework throughout her life, but her painting career came much later. Laura Ingalls Wilder gained her success as a writer in her 60’s. Julia Child didn’t even know how to cook until her late 50’s and her cookbook success came another decade later.
Perhaps the reason for these late bloomers’ success was due to the fact that our older years often find us with a little more time to dedicate to our passions. Don’t let fear of failure stop you from pursuing something you’ve always wanted to try. Who cares if you don’t become another Picasso or write a best seller? Almost every successful person will tell you “the joy is in the journey.”
Where to Begin?
Start with your dreams. Have you always wanted to take beautiful photographs? Start looking at the world with an eye for beauty and then use whatever camera you have to begin. Have you always wanted to try your hand at painting or drawing? Start doodling and get yourself a few supplies and try your hand.
I had always wanted to be a writer and while I’ll probably never write the Great American Novel, I love writing articles that encourage others and profiles of older adults that are inspiring to me and to my readers.
Education is a Lifelong Pursuit!
There has never been more opportunity to obtain a higher education than in your later years. Many colleges and universities offer classes with seniors in mind and some offer very reduced rates for older learners. I went back to college in my late 40’s and earned my degree the year I turned 50! Sure I was apprehensive at first, but after I received my first A in a college course I didn’t care I was old enough to be most students’ mom.
The benefits of learning cannot be underscored. Learning keeps our brains sharp and a new pursuit often brings new people into our lives. Everyone at every age needs purpose and joy in each new day. Why not start to write down those wonderful family stories to pass on to the next generation? Perhaps you’ve always wanted to learn to sew or quilt? Jump in and find a class at the local fabric shop or community center.
Don’t let these wonderful years pass you by without pursuing your passions. Show your children and grandchildren that growing older is a wonderful time of life when you can accomplish your goals and thrive!
