Best way to tell parent they have to move out of the house into a facility

    How do you break the news to an aging parent that he or she cannot live with you anymore—that they would be better off living in a retirement community facility?

    Sensitively, calmly; the situation could get prickly. I would suggest your overture would be along a positive line: “We are going to help you get better. Improve your diet, get healthy.” Focus on the NOW. Usually parents think in a temporary time frame, so continue to encourage that frame of mind. Especially if they are not mentally ready to handle the fact that they will probably be a permanent resident—as it could lead to depression.
