I’m trying to locate a reliable and not too expensive service that will check to be sure my mother, who lives alone, is OK. Can anyone help me?

There are many services available to check on your mother – some services provide phone calls to call her at certain times. SageMinder–http://www.sageminder.com — is such a company that provides phone checks and will report back to you that things are okay, and even give her medication reminders.

If you want visits from caregivers, start with your networks. Sometimes the best referrals come through family, friends, neighbors, or senior centers. There may be a neighbor interested in brief check-ins. If you’re part of a local church or synagogue, there may be meals or socialization activities available. Ask the people you know if they have care providers they have used and trusted.

Your doctor or other healthcare professional may be able to provide referrals as well.

Another internet resource is http://www.care.com that also provides caregivers in your area.
