Extremely itchy skin is called pruritus – there are many causes and the first step is to try to identify the source of the problem. Some of the environmental reasons might be excessive use of soaps, too many hot baths, over-exposure to the sun, and overheated rooms. Medical problems that can cause itching are kidney disease or shingles. Parasites like scabies or lice also cause itching. Dehydration, smoking and stress are other factors. Moisturizing body soaps and creams can be used, but the elder should be seen by a doctor to help determine the cause of the itching if the source can’t be determined by the caregiver. The doctor might recommend medical treatment or special creams that will help moisturize the skin.
